Hopefully you have all  heard about the DisturbED project.

DisturbED (Documenting Improvements in Safe and Timely Use of Restraiint By the ED) is a combined quality improvement project and practice based observational study.  Acute Severe Behavioural Disturbance is the 5th most common reason for prsentation to our ED and presents a huge management challenge.

Much high quality Australian  research has been conducted in recent years that provides much evidence to assist with optimising management of ASBD. Patients do not like mechanical restraint. Droperidol as safe and rapidly effective. Longer acting agents are often required secondarily. Close monitoring is essential. Sedation Scores are useful.

Our final year medical student Nicole Southi is collecting data 3 months pre and 3 months post promotion of the new ED chemical sedation guideline to measure a number of outcomes indicative of quality care.

Please familiarise yourselves with the guideline posted around the ED, on the walls, in the DisturbED folders on every ED desktop or here.

A more detailed summary of the project, the evidence behind it and our preferred sedation score can also be found here.
